A Home Inspection is part of the standard process of buying a home. But a Sewer Inspection is not part of that and it often gets overlooked. However, your Drain & Sewer system is one of the most significant parts of your home which can give you more insight into the overall condition of the home.
Why do a Sewer Inspection?
Sewer Inspections can happen at any age of a home. However, it is especially recommended for homes at least over 20 years old. A sewer system may be affected due to several reasons. Older homes were built with a less durable material such as Cast Iron, Clay, and even Orangeburg. Knowing the condition of your Sewer system gives you peace of mind that it is not infested by roots, nor damaged. A Sewer repair or replacement can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 depending on the severity.
How do I Perform a Sewer Inspection?
Sewer Inspection is done by using a Sewer Video Camera. The fiberoptic camera is attached to a flexible metal cable to be able to make its way through your home’s sewer system. It has the capability of viewing the inside of the pipes with powerful lights on the camera which then allows me to view the live feed on the display monitor.
Here are a few signs you might want to ask for a Sewer Inspection for the home:
The Home is from the 1970’s and older.
Well established trees on or near the property.
Bad Odors. Sewage odors may be indicative of sewer issues.
Slow-moving drains, backups (this may be determined during home Inspection)
